Registry Errors in Windows XP

Registry in Windows XP operating system contains information about user-profiles, installed applications, documents created, hardware added to your system and more. Corruption in registry primarily occurs due to human errors, installing an incompatible application, unexpected system shutdown, software bugs and more. In most cases of registry corruption, you encounter an error message during the booting process. After you encounter the error message, the data saved in the hard drive becomes inaccessible. To overcome these data loss scenarios, the best possible way is to restore the data from an updated backup. However, in case of no backup availability, you need to use advanced Partition Recovery software to recover your lost data.

Below is the list of error messages that you might encounter after the registry gets corrupted:

“Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM”

Or

“Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SOFTWARE”

Or

“Stop: c0000218 {Registry File Failure} The registry cannot load the hive (file): \SystemRoot\System32\Config\SOFTWARE or its log or alternate”

Or

“System error: Lsass.exe
When trying to update a password the return status indicates that the value provided as the current password is not correct.”

The data saved in the hard drive becomes inaccessible after any of the above error messages appear.

Resolution:

To resolve the above error message and access the data, you need to follow the below steps:

  1. Start Recovery Console.
  2. At the command prompt, type the below lines, press ENTER after you type each line:

del c:\windows\system32\config\sam

del c:\windows\system32\config\security

del c:\windows\system32\config\software

del c:\windows\system32\config\default

del c:\windows\system32\config\system

copy c:\windows\tmp\software c:\windows\system32\config\software

copy c:\windows\tmp\system c:\windows\system32\config\system

copy c:\windows\tmp\sam c:\windows\system32\config\sam

copy c:\windows\tmp\security c:\windows\system32\config\security

copy c:\windows\tmp\default c:\windows\system32\config\default

  1. Type exit to quit Recovery Console. Your computer restarts.

Note: This procedure assumes that Windows XP is installed to the C:\Windows folder. Make sure to change C:\Windows to the appropriate windows_folder if it is a different location.

However, if any of the above error messages still appear after following the above steps, perform a clean reinstall of Windows XP. A clean reinstall of Windows XP will erase all the files and folders from the selected hard drive partition.
